The Rainmaker
Who is the Rainmaker?
According to “Success secrets of the Online Marketing” book, a rainmaker is someone who generates income for a business or an organization by brokering deals or attracting clients or funds.
He is the person who makes it rain. Of course rain in this context is a metaphor for profit or success. Thus, the one who makes it rain makes the rules. So how can we characterize this rainmaker? He must be a valuable source of information, resourceful, MUST be a professional expert, generous, Authentic, and of course, trust worthy. So let’s look at each aspect closely.
A valuable source of information and resourceful. This is the number one rule for any rainmaker. He has to be well read, to keep up with the latest news and most importantly; he must know how to use this information in his favor. As for being resourceful, one must admit that life is filled with obstacles, but there is no place worth going unless you fight for it. All you must remember is to keep your eyes on your goals, where you want to go. Only then will all the obstacles disappear.
Being an expert. The rainmaker must be an expert in his field. Now a days the Internet is filled with all the information you could ever dream of, so why not use it to broaden our minds. Read in your field, everything around us is constantly evolving and you need to catch up, otherwise, you will be in the same place for the rest of your life. The market now is in constant race, and you have only three options, to be in the lead, to keep up, or to fall behind. The choice is always yours, so be smart. Sure it takes a lot of effort and time, but you know very well that the results will be worth it.
The rainmaker must be generous. According to “dictionary.com” the word generous means liberal in giving or sharing; unselfish. Whether it’s giving money, gift, or information. The most important thing to remember is to give without any expectation of getting something else in return. So think of it, when you freely share your expertise and knowledge you’re not giving anything away. You still have them. But the sharing will lead to more people knowing you and trusting you, and isn’t that your goal? To be trustworthy and respected.
Authentic (genuine or real). If the rainmaker is generous, expert, resourceful, and reliable, then it is no surprise that he also must be authentic. According to the “Mastering Online Marketing” people are constantly judged based on two things: competence and warmth. Competence here is about authority; you have to actually know what you’re doing. According to the book “ The Human Brand” , countless psychology studies show that warmth is characterized by people who are: helpful, honest, trustworthy, generous, fair, and understanding. Authority without warmth makes people envious and suspicious. The simple equation is:
KNOW+ LIKE+ TRUST= BELIEF
So let me ask you, do you have a rainmaker in your company? Who is it? Most importantly if its not you, why isn’t it not you? You know the characteristics know. So don’t you want to be that person; the one that everybody looks up to; the one that makes it rain?
